Non Lightening Bolt01.12.2024 19:00 GMT Hello and welcome back to another Forgotten Hope 2 update. Today is the 1st of December, and of course that means that ModDB are running their Mod of the Year competition again. Please consider giving us a vote this year, the first round closes on the 10th. Anyway, we now get onto the meat of this news post: the KV-1 model 1940 s ekranami. The KV-1 s ekranami (with screens) is the result of a program of up-armouring of the first batches of KV-1 tanks in response to the perceived threat of German high velocity anti-tank guns. The plans for this were drawn up in the spring of 1941, and originally also included the KV-2. It was felt that the only way to counter this in the case of the KV tanks was to increase the armour thickness, and while plans were begun for new builds to come fresh off the line with this, the immediate need would have to be met by a program of upgrades. The package consisted of a number of steel plates that would be bolted to the hull and turret. New build tanks and older vehicles in for maintenance began to receive this in July 1941, with the plan to upgrade all existing KV-1 by the end of the year. It seems that this was never to be, and the program may have lasted only a month or 2. It was soon apparent that increasing the weight of the already heavy KV-1 to over 50 tons put unreasonable stress on the suspension and drivetrain. For this reason the already overweight KV-2 was never even touched. It was not uncommon for the frontal road wheels to break under the strain. It is not known exactly how many KV-1 tanks were upgraded in this manner exactly, however it was likely around 100, with not all receiving both hull and turret plates. Ours was modified by Seth Soldier from Toddel's original KV-1S. That's all for this week, but be sure to come back next time for another update. Until then, feel free to visit our Discord, our public forums, and our subreddit to discuss this update and other news. |
